What does a redirect checker do?
It follows a URL through every hop of its redirect chain and shows you each step - the status code (301, 302, 307…), the destination, and where the chain finally lands. That surfaces the problems you can't see from the browser: redirect loops, chains that are longer than they should be, broken final destinations, and temporary redirects being used where permanent ones belong.
Why do 302 redirects hurt SEO?
A 301 is a permanent redirect and passes almost all of a page's link equity to the new URL; a 302 is temporary and signals to search engines that the old URL will return, so equity is held back. Sites often use 302s by accident (many frameworks and CMSs default to them), quietly leaking ranking signals. The checker flags every 302 in a chain so you can switch the permanent ones to 301s.
How many redirects is too many?
Aim for one. Every extra hop adds latency and risks losing a little more signal, and long chains are a common cause of crawl budget waste. Two hops is usually tolerable; three or more is worth fixing by pointing the first URL straight at the final destination.
Do redirect chains affect how AI engines crawl my site?
Yes. AI crawlers like GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot follow redirects the same way search crawlers do, and long or broken chains can stop them reaching your content - which means you can't be read, understood or cited. Clean, single-hop 301s keep every engine's path to your pages short and reliable.
